Do you hear clicking noises when you turn the ignition, or does it take a while for your engine to start? You might need to replace your battery. Many Bridgeport drivers do this themselves, and you can learn how to disconnect and install a car battery too. Just follow these instructions from the Ocean Honda Milford service team. .

How to Disconnect and Install a Car Battery Yourself

It doesn’t feel good when you’re in a rush to get to your meeting in Westport and you discover that your battery is dead. Thankfully, once you know how to disconnect and install a car battery, you can resolve the problem yourself:

Removing Your Old Battery

  • Make sure that the car is in park, has its parking brake engaged, and is turned off.
  • Open the hood and locate your battery. Your owner’s manual will contain specifics, but usually, you’ll find it near the front of the engine compartment.
  • Then, detach the negative (-) cable from the battery. Be sure to do so before removing the positive (+) cable, and do not allow your wrench to touch both the negative and positive terminals at the same time.
  • Now, detach the positive (+) cable from the battery. Only do so once the negative cable is completely disconnected.
  • Remove the bracket that holds the battery in place. Some vehicles may not have such a bracket.
  • Remove the old battery. Take care to lift it with both hands, or by its handle if it has one. Do not throw it away! Batteries must be properly recycled since they contain toxic chemicals. The retailer where you bought the new battery will likely be able to take it off your hands.

Installing the New Battery

  • Check the connectors on the ends of the positive and negative cables for corrosion. It will look like white or greenish powder. If there is any, clean it off with a wire brush.
  • Set the new battery in place. Replace the bracket.
  • Connect the positive (+) cable first.
  • Connect the negative (-) cable second. You will get a short or an electrical shock if you connect these cables in the wrong order.
  • Turn on the engine to test.
